NACD Sponsors Chemistry Competition in Virginia (New Date)
On Thursday, March 18 students from Harper Park Middle School (HPMS), located in Leesburg, VA, and Eagle Ridge Middle School (ERMS), located in Ashburn, VA will compete in a You Be The Chemist (YBTC) Challenge – an academic question-and-answer competition created by the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) and sponsored by the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD). The YBTC Challenge competition aims to engage grade 5-8 students in chemistry through a dynamic event that partners members of the chemical industry with schools and organizations in the communities in which they operate.
This competition, known as a Local Challenge, will take place from 7- 9 p.m. at the HPMS auditorium. The Local Challenge participants are the top four scorers from a qualification exam held at each school in January. Mike Lang, NACD’s Director of the Responsible Distribution ProcessSM (RDP) will represent NACD at the event. An awards ceremony and reception will follow the competition.
“CEF is a primary public outreach vehicle for NACD members. In fact, CEF helps distributors comply with the product stewardship and community outreach requirements of RDP,” stated NACD President and COO Christopher Jahn. “We strongly encourage all of our member and affiliate companies to get involved in CEF programs, particularly as the You Be The Chemist Challenge continues to showcase such bright students who are our future scientists, engineers, and chemists,” he added.
Those students with the top 20 highest scores from each school’s qualification exam will receive Challenge T-shirts, note pads, and pencils. The top three winners of the Local Challenge will receive monetary prizes. Additionally, the winner of the competition will advance to the National YBTC Challenge, to be held on June 18 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, PA. There, they will compete against winners from across the country for the title of national champion.
